Literary Tours to Britain, Scotland & Wales
Casterbridge began as a tour operator offering private literary study tours to England, Scotland & Wales. Literary tours have long been a specialty for us and we have a wealth of experience and numerous contacts and resources. We can custom design thematic literary tours or thematic days around any of the great authors or periods in British literature.
Your group can experience first-hand the landscapes and sites that influenced the creations of Britain’s finest and most recognized authors. Imagine strolling along the streets of Shakespeare’s Stratford, visiting his birthplace and museum, viewing his tomb, and then hearing his words interpreted anew by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
As you wander the moors that so affected the imaginations of the Brontës and visit the lonely parsonage at Haworth where they wrote their novels, you cannot fail to gain a deeper insight into their writings.
When you explore the gentle countryside of Thomas Hardy’s Wessex and discover the thatched cottage where the poet and novelist was born, you will appreciate the influence of, and affinity Hardy had for, his surroundings.
For scenic grandeur on literary tours to England, nothing compares with the majestic peaks and fells of the Lake District which inspired the poetry of Wordsworth and Coleridge.
You can follow in the footsteps of Chaucer’s pilgrims to Canterbury, explore the London of Charles Dickens, and enjoy the decorous elegance of Jane Austen’s Bath. Indeed, the options are endless.
A Great Option for Family Tours: “Literature on Location Harry Potter”
Why not include a few thematic days centered on the inspirations and film sets used for the Harry Potter books and movies. Combine elements from our classic British literary tours with the exciting and magical world of Harry Potter.
The Harry Potter books and movies have featured many of the most spectacular settings in England. On our “Literature on Location” Harry Potter tour you will visit Alnwick Castle and Warwick Castle, both of which served as inspiration for the exterior of Hogwarts. Explore Goathland Railway Station, set high on the Yorkshire Moorlands. The station is almost as it was when built in 1865 and is identical to that of Hogsmeade Station where the students arrive on the Hogwarts Express. Visit the Kirkleatham Owl Center, which has one of the best collections of owls in the British Isles; explore Oxford and the visit the Dining Hall of Christ Church College, the setting for the dining hall at Hogwarts; stroll the Cloisters at Gloucester Cathedral; view the interior of Lacock Abbey, which provided interior scenes at Hogwarts School; and conclude in London at King’s Cross Station to view platform 9 3/4 and the Reptile House at London Zoo, where Harry learns that he can to talk to the snakes.
