Specialized American Literature Tours

Casterbridge offers the best American literature tours for student groups. We began as a tour operator offering private literary tours in Great Britain, so literary tours have long been a specialty for us. Indeed we have a wealth of experience and numerous contacts and resources that we can draw upon. We can custom design thematic literary study tours or thematic days around any of the great authors or periods in American literature.

Your students can experience first-hand the landscapes and sites that influenced the creations of America’s finest and most recognized authors, such as Emerson, Thoreau, Alcott, Longfellow, Cooper, Hawthorne, Twain, Frost, Irving, Stowe, Dickinson, Dr. Seuss, Steinbeck, and London.

Casterbridge’s American literature tours offer your students an opportunity to visit sites that inspired great American novels, stories, and poetry, as well as museums and cultural centers that keep these words fresh and meaningful. Bring American literature to life while at the same time inspiring your students. Who knows – you may have the world’s next great author with you on your tour!

Literary Focus: Literary California

On our “Literary California” itinerary we focus on two great American writers, Jack London and John Steinbeck. Both of these authors had strong connections with and were greatly influenced by, the events that took place in the greater Bay area of California.

Local specialist guides will bring to life the works of these authors and the words in the text book are certain to have greater meaning after seeing California and the places that served as inspiration for these great writers.

Your students can visit Jack London State Historic Park for insight into the life and activities of Jack London. Within the beautiful park, you can take a guided hike to learn more about Jack London, as well as visit the Museum, Wolfe House, Beauty Ranch, Jack London’s Cottage, and his Gravesite.

On thematic days around the life and works of John Steinbeck, your students will explore Salinas, just south of San José. Your students will explore the National Steinbeck Center, which features experiences in literature, history, agriculture, and art. The John Steinbeck Exhibition Hall uses multi-sensory exhibits to bring the words of the great writer to life. You can also visit his childhood home and the Garden of Memories Cemetery where Steinbeck’s ashes are buried. Other visits can include the Steinbeck Memorial Museums, the John Steinbeck Library, and a Historic Walking Tour of Pacific Grove.
